HART Winter Shelter

With its 2,000 references to caring for the poor, the Bible is definitive in God’s heart for them and in our responsibility to love and serve. Lakeside is steadfast in our mission to love and reach wider than our tribe, including our yearly participation in the HART Winter Shelter.

Hosted by various community churches and managed by HART of Folsom, the HART Winter Shelter provides three months of temporary overnight lodging, along with dinner and breakfast, for as many as twenty homeless guests at a time.

Lakeside volunteer Trudy Hoekstra manages our participation, noting that the shelter serves both long-term and short-term purposes. “While we are so glad to meet some of their immediate needs with a meal and a place to stay, we also want to introduce our homeless guests to the HART mentoring program where they can begin working toward self-sufficiency and greater independence.”

Lakeside will be hosting two weeks of the shelter, January 30-February 6 and February 13-20. Guests will be provided with a cot, sleeping bag, warm dinner, and bagged breakfast, in addition to an opportunity to shower. Each week requires about 60-70 volunteers to help:

-       Make and serve food

-       Deliver food

-       Oversee guests

-       Launder clothes and towels

-       Clean up

Attend our informational meeting January 16 to find out more about the processes and procedures of the winter shelter and to find out more about volunteering.
